Characteristics

The thalli are distictly intricate cespitode, forming low, prostrate clumps on the substrate, reddish, purplish or greenish when dried; main axes are not percurrent and are compressed or subteret measuring 0.3 - 1.7mm broad in dried material; brancing is repeatedly subdichotomous to alternate in wide angles forming rounded axil; branchlets bifurcate into short stubby spines at the terminal portions; short ultimate branchlets are not dense and are arranged alternately, pinnately or secundly; these are characteristically stout, stubby and spinose.

Distribution : Maharashtra, Karnataka, Lakshadweep

Uses : It is a carrageenan yielding plant. This seaweed is also edible and the freshly gathered seaweed is commonly prepared as salad.
